Expanded second edition of the celebrated bibliography of Hawaiian Islands Exploration
Judd, Bernice. Lind, Helen, ed. Voyages To Hawaii Before 1860 : A Record, Based on Historical Narratives in the Libraries of the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society and the Hawaiian Historical Society, Extended to 1860. The University Press of Hawaii For Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society : Honolulu. 1974. Second edition.
Originally published in 1929 by Bernice Judd of the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society Library, this book represents the culmination of her life’s work, having been created based on the annotations and expanded notes in Judd’s own copy of the first edition.
The introduction to the second edition explicitly states it is “primarily an enlargement rather than a revised version of Miss Judd’s original book” because “very few changes in factual information were necessary”.
Hawaiian bibliography and even a list of ships and shipwrecks had been largely neglected until 1920 when Mr. George R Carter, Hawaii governor and Hawaiiana enthusiast, donated his entire collection to the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society. Through her subsequent years of work analyzing the library’s contents Judd was able to compile this document, which she continued to revise until her death, documenting ships and individuals mentioned as well as the titles and descriptions of historical narratives featuring Hawaii ahead of the year 1860.
