Early issue of the gay underground magazine Vanguard including an essay on bisexuality and its denial of as a distinct sexuality and an extract from Frederick Karl Forberg’s Manual of Erotology “On Pedication”, highlighting instances of homosexual anal sex in antiquity. This issue also includes a short explication on hippy philosophy “Beads, Bells and Beards” as well as interviews with East Village Other founder and editor Walter Bowart; a “dope dealer” named Tim; and an anonymous aspiring civil rights advocate speaking on Black art and culture. Poetry features frequently, including work from San Francisco Oracle founder and editor, Allen Cohen.

Vanguard was a prominent gay youth rights organization founded in San Francisco in 1965 which continued operations until 1967. The affiliated magazine, started in 1966, was continued by editor Keith St. Clare into the 1970s.

34pp, staple bound periodical. Printed paper wraps with minor soiling. Pages toned but clean apart from pencil notes front page. Illustrated throughout. Very good.
