Description

The original issue of Upper and Lower Case, the International Journal of Typographics edited by noted designer Herb Lubalin, featuring the first appearance of the font Zapf Dingbats

Lubalin, Herb, ed. Upper and Lower Case The International Journal of Typographics Volume 5 No. 2. June 1978. International Typeface Corporation. New York, New York.

This issue of the influential U&lc (Upper and Lower Case) magazine, the official journal published by the International Typeface Corporation, features the first ever appearance of the nonsensical Zapf Dingbats font. Consisting of a set of symbols and pictograms, rather than letters, and Dingbats was designed for use in desktop publishing and computer graphics and remains in use as a simple way to create illustrations and diagrams. Developed by German typographer, calligrapher, and type designer Hermann Zapf between 1977 – 78, Dingbats is one of over 200 typefaces Zapf created in his lifetime including Palatino and Optima. Like Zapf, U&lc editor, graphic designer, and typeface creator Herb Lubalin was recognized for his clean, modernist aesthetic as well as his influence on early computer typography and spent the final ten years of his life working on U&lc  before his death in 1981.

71pp, staple bound newsprint folio. Wraps and pages toned. Fore corners bumped. Illustrated in black and white and color in places. Near fine.
