Description

Original issue of Twentieth Century featuring first appearance of Maurice Richardson’s ” Psychoanalysis of Ghost Stories ” and writing from Colin Wilson

Richardson, Maurice, Wilson, Colin, et al. The Twentieth Century : December 1959 Vol. 166 No. 994. Whitefriars Press Limited. London. 1959.

A later and well – populated issue of the British periodical The Twentieth Century (formerly, The Nineteenth Century until 1901 and then The Nineteenth Century and After until 1951) containing a profile interview of Vladimir Nabokov at Cornell University four years after the publication of Lolita, a political column including discussions of anarchism and socialism from Colin Wilson just before the release of his novel Ritual In The Dark, and Maurice Richardson’s influential essay The Psychoanalysis of Ghost Stories.

In this piece, Richardson, primarily a short story writer and journalist, made literary history as the first known writer to apply psychoanalysis to Dracula ( among other ghost stories ) forming what might be called the “standard” interpretation of the Bram Stoker novel.

8vo, perfect bound printed paper wrap magazine. Some external soiling and toning. Wrinkling along front and back spine hinge. Front wrap slightly detached at top hinge end. Corners bumped with minor creasing to internal page corners. Pages clean. Very good.
