Description
Early edition of the anonymously published etiquette guide authored by George S Appleton , son of David Appleton.
[Appleton, George S]. True Politeness : A Handbook On Etiquette For Gentlemen By An American Gentleman. Leavitt & Allen : New York [1848].
George S. Appleton , third son of D. Appleton and Company founder David Appleton , started out as a bit of the family black sheep. Unlike his older brothers who worked as his father’s apprentices, George Appleton spent his youth traveling throughout Europe, studied in Leipzig, and only returned to the United States after meeting and marrying his wife in Paris in 1846.
When David Appleton retired in 1848, George’s brothers William and John took over the operations of D. Appleton and Company in New York while George settled and tried to establish himself in Philadelphia. Writing and also publishing on his own for nearly 20 years before joining the family business, this etiquette guide was simultaneously released in Philadelphia under his personal imprint George S Appleton and in New York by Leavitt & Allen. D. Appleton and Company would handle the New York release of the 1849 printing.
