Rare 1970s Evangelical Anti – Transcendental Meditation Tract TM A Christian Response By Rev Elmer E Johnson
Johnson, Rev Elmer E. TM: A Christian Response An Analysis and Theological Evaluation of Transcendental Meditation from an Evangelical Christian Perspective. Careers With Christ Press – Philadelphia College of Bible. Philadelphia. August 1975.
Anti-transcendental meditation text by Rev. Elmer E Johnson (d. 2020), then professor at Philadelphia College of the Bible (today Cairn University). After offering a brief history of TM and its rise in popularity, noting the Beatles meeting with the Maharishi in 1967 as well as its adoption by NY Jets star Joe Namath, Johnson declares it a symptom of modern man’s focus on the pragmatic: what works and not what is true. Saying that “TM is playing to win” with the goal to spread and reshape the world, Johnson identifies it with the devil and the predicted rise of the antichrist in the name of world peace. Specifically, he denounces the veneration of Guru Dev as idolatry, condemns mantra as clouding the mind in defiance of St. Peter’s instruction to keep the mind sober in prayer, as well as TM in general seeming to offer a path to the divine outside of Jesus.
