The Young Farmer’s Manual was one of the first works by agriculture and architecture author Sereno Edwards Todd, famous for the Illustrated Todd’s Country Homes (1888). A native of Lake Cayuga, New York this book first appeared in an 1859 edition printed in Albany before Todd moved with his family, including his son the future astronomer David Peck Todd, to Brooklyn in 1860. This revised and expanded edition was one of the early books sold by the publisher Orange Judd and Company, founded by Orange Judd Wesleyan University graduate, Yale University chemistry researcher, and editor of the American Agriculturist as well as the New York Times’ agriculture section.

8vo, 459pp, soiled, faded purple blind stamped boards with title, author, and publisher gilt to spine. Corners bumped, spine ends bruised. Bruise to back board edge near hinge. Some toning and wear to book block. Ownership inscription in pencil front free endpaper, repeated in ink on the upper margin of title page. Pages otherwise clean. Thoroughly illustrated. Good condition.
