Early Issue of Washington DC Area Underground Newspaper The Washington Independent Featuring Coverage of Allen Ginsberg at A Tompkins Square Park Peace Rally
De Baggio, Thomas. The Washington Independent. Vol 1, No 14. J. Middleton Crowley IV. Washington, D.C. May 3, 1967.
This issue of the underground newspaper The Washington Independent includes coverage of the first “Human Be-In” in Washington DC, still legal LSD research on alcoholism by Dr Charles Savage, raising bail for poet D.A. Levy following his arrest for obscenity charges, and Allen Ginsberg’s vocal performance as part of a Peace Rally in Tompkins Square Park. According to declassified CIA documents, the contents of this issue– specifically the research into Imperial Agent by Guy Richards which claimed to profile the surviving Tsarevich Alexei Romanov under the name Michal Goleniewski– brought The Washington Independent and its editor Thomas De Baggio to the attention of the agency.
