Signed First Edition of The Third Mind by William S Burroughs and Brion Gysin Laying Out The Artistic Theory of Cut-Ups
Burroughs, William S and Gysin, Brion. The Third Mind. Viking. New York. 1978. First Edition.
A signed copy of The Third Mind, the pioneering collaboration between William Burroughs and Brion Gysin, laying out the history, philosophy, methods, and examples of the cut-up technique. Named for a line from Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, per the text’s forward, “The Third Mind… represents the experimental stage of this technology. It is not the history of a literary collaboration but rather the complete fusion in a praxis of two subjectivities, two subjectivities that metamorphose into a third; it is from this collusion that a new author emerges, an absent third person, invisible and beyond grasp, decoding the silence.” Announced by Grove Press in 1970, the work was not finished and released until this Viking publication in 1978.
194pp. Cloth strip bound in black paper boards with silver lettering to spine. Spine ends and bottom corners bumped. Minor wear to bottom edge. Ink stains to text block bottom edge. Inscribed by Burroughs on half-title. Original dust jacket with minor wear to edges and lower fore corner. Very good.
