Jain, J.C. The Murder of Mahatma Gandhi: Prelude and Aftermath. Chetana Limited : Bombay. 1961. First edition.

The Murder of Mahatma Gandhi, published by Chetana Limited in Bombay, India, in 1961, is a detailed account of the assassination of the Indian leader and trial that followed written by Gandhi’s follower and chief witness for the prosecution, Professor Jagdish Chandra Jain.

Jagdish Chandra Jain was a close associate of Gandhi, leaving his university studies in 1929 to join Gandhi’s satyagraha movement and peaceful efforts toward Indian independence. (He would also play a key role in the Indian National Congress, serve as a member of the All India Congress Committee, and as the president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee). On January 30, 1948, Jain was present at the Birla House, where Gandhi was staying when he was assassinated. On the day of the assassination, Gandhi was walking to a prayer meeting when he was shot three times by Nathuram Godse. Jain was one of the first people to rush to Gandhi’s aid and was instrumental in identifying Godse as the assassin. Gandi would die a few hours later.

At the Gandhi murder trial, Jain’s testimony was crucial in establishing the guilt of the accused. He provided detailed accounts of the events leading up to the assassination and the role played by Godse and his accomplices. His testimony helped to establish the motive behind the assassination and to highlight the danger posed by extremist elements in Indian society. This book, written 13 years after the fact, seeks to explain how the assassination occurred, the motives behind those who plotted to murder Mahatma Gandhi and the aftermath of these events, including Gandhi’s relevance to Indians and non-Indians after his death.
