Description
First Softcover Edition of The Last Words of Dutch Schultz by William Burroughs Owned By Genesis Breyer P-Orridge
Burroughs, William. The Last Words of Dutch Schultz. Cape Goliard Press. London. 1970. First softcover edition.
First softcover edition of The Last Words of Dutch Schultz, published simultaneously with the hardcover first edition by Cape Goliard Press ahead of the American release. An unfilmable “closet screenplay” based upon the life of prohibition era New York gangster Dutch Schultz, interestingly, Burroughs’ treatment eschews inclusion of the actual, surreal dying words of Schultz, suggesting the recording should be played throughout the film as a soundtrack.
This copy was formerly owned by the late artist, musician, publisher and occultist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (1950 – 2020) known for their involvement with the Temple Ov Psychick Youth and the musical groups Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. Burroughs and his collaborator Brion Gysin served as artistic and spiritual mentors and touchstones for Genesis Breyer P-Orridge throughout the latter’s career including their interest in dream machines, cut-up, and other techniques developed by Burroughs and Gysin. A noted collector and chronicler of underground artists and movements in their own right, P-Orridge also published their interviews with Gysin under the title, Brion Gysin His Name Was Master.
81pp. Perfect bound with photoprinted wraps. Corners bumped and worn. Wraps pulling at fore edges. Original glassine overwrap. Text block toned. Pages clean. Ownership inscription from Genesis Breyer P-Orridge on top title margin. Very good.
