Advance Review Copy of Influential Biography of Gurdjieff , Ouspensky and Their Followers, The Harmonious Circle by James Webb

Webb, James. The Harmonious Circle The Lives and Work of G.I. Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky, and Their Followers. G.P. Putnams Sons. N.Y. 1980.

First US edition of the influential biography of spiritual teachers Gurdjieff and Ouspensky and their circle. Described by later Gurdjieff researcher Paul Beekman Taylor as “the first systematic biographical account by a writer who hadn’t known Gurdjieff personally,” The Harmonious Circle was the product of eight years of research by its author and remains controversial in some circles for its conclusions as to the origins of Gurdjieff’s ideas. This early review copy includes two presentation slips from the publisher including a brief description from Publisher’s Weekly ahead of the books publication in April 1980. Webb, who also wrote The Occult Underground and The Occult Establishment, died by suicide in May of the same year aged 34.

608pp. Black paper boards with title, author and publisher gilt to spine. Corners and spine ends bumped. Minor soiling p 414. Otherwise clean. Includes map and 16 pages of photographs. Original dustjacket with wear to edges and spine ends. Very good in very good.
