The Great Speckled Bird. Vol 7 No 38. Atlanta Cooperative News Project. Atlanta, GA. September 23, 1973.

Well preserved issue of Atlanta, Georgia area underground newspaper The Great Speckled Bird featuring coverage of the US supported September 1973 overthrow of Socialist Chilean president Salvador Allende, resulting in Allende’s death and the rise of the Pinochet regime. This issue also includes coverage of American Indian Movement activists Dennis Banks and Russell Means having their charges dismissed over the standoff at Wounded Knee prior to the case going before the Supreme Court in January 1974.

A product of the Atlanta Cooperative News Project, The Great Speckled Bird ran from 1968 to 1976. In 1972, the US Postal Service took action against the paper, seizing issues featuring advertisements for abortion services. When contested, the US District court found in the favor of News Project members Jeani Lockard and Renee Cronk on first amendment grounds.
