Early guide to the symbolic language of flowers, originally published in 1844, compiled by writer and editor Sarah Carter Edgarton Mayo (1819 – 1848), whose other works include The Floral Fortune Teller and Fables of Flora. In addition to a hand painted frontis piece and a full-page entry of associations for each flower, the alphabetical index also features a quick reference column of meanings for ease of use.
157pp. 16mo. Blind stamped brown boards with gilt decoration and lettering to front and spine. Boards darkened and faded. Corners rubbed. Spine ends worn with losses. Small splitting to back spine joint cloth. Pages toned but clean. Gilt edges. Includes hand painted frontis. Good.
