The Beats edited by Seymour Kim. Greenwich, Conn: Gold Medal / Fawcett Publishing. March 1960, stated First Printing of early anthology including works by Jack Kerouac , Allen Ginsberg , and others.
Edited by New Yorker, Village Voice, and Playboy writer Seymour Krim, this collection of “raw, penetrating stories, poems, and social criticism” features writing from Norman Mailer, William Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg among others. An early attempt to capture the essence of The Beats , the book begins with a statement of the movements’ essential philosophical and artistic conceits before extending into poetry, non-fiction, and more experimental forms like the inclusion of sections from Burroughs’ Naked Lunch. This copy, apparently owned by a contemporary poetry fan, includes several pencil notations quoting Dylan Thomas and commenting on the quality of verse.
8vo, printed paper wraps. Reading creases to spine. Some small pencil annotations. Partial split in book block at pp 160-161, but binding tight. Good condition.
