Description

First American Edition of Important, Beautifully Illustrated Unique Cartomancy Text The Astrological Tarot by George Muchery Published by the David McKay Company

Muchery, Georges. Valloir, Marguerite. The Astrological Tarot (Astromancy). David McKay Company. Philadelphia. [1929?].

Scarce first American edition of The Astrological Tarot (Astromancy) by Georges Muchery, first published in French in 1927 and originally translated into English in a Rider and Co published UK edition of 1928.

Well known is his lifetime for his French language writings on astrology, magic, and divination, this example of Muchery’s most famous work combines the principles of astrology and cartomancy toward the creation of an original system, “astromancy”, utilizing a unique deck of 48 cards, first published by B.P. Grimaud the same year as the book’s French release.

The beautifully designed cards (reproduced in black and white in the present volume) were created by the uncredited illustrator and cartoonist Henri Armengol (1884 – 1944) and consist of 36 cards corresponding to the decans of the Zodiac, 9 star and planet cards, and one card each for the ascendant, ascending and descending lunar nodes, and the part of fortune, which, when combined, generate horoscopes for quick interpretation.

Two copies found in OCLC as of August 2024.

312pp. Purple cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and blind stamped borders to boards. Cloth lightly stained by dustjacket ink. Corners bumped. Spine ends worn. Text block and pages toned with occasional foxing. Illustrated throughout. Original dustjacket with toning. Tears to top spine, back spine joint, and both flaps. Minor soiling to spine. Good.
