Description

First Underground Comic From Zippy and Griffith Observatory Creator Bill Griffith Tales of Toad Published By Print Mint In 1970

Griffith, Bill. Tales of Toad #1. The Print Mint. Berkeley, CA. 1970.

Early comic from Bill Griffith, creator of Griffith Observatory and Zippy. Griffith’s first widely distributed comic, his submitted manuscript was four pages short of the minimum underground publisher The Print Mint required, resulting in Griffith creating the final Toad tales during an unexpected week stay in a San Francisco hotel room. Despite these issues and low sales, Griffith would continue to work with Print Mint, publisher of the highly influential anthologies Zap, Bijou Funnies, and Yellow Dog, including the launch of his most famous character, Zippy the Pinhead in their Real Pulp Comics #1 in 1971.

36pp. Sunning to front wrap with wear to spine and edges. Small split at top spine. Pages toned but clean. Good.
