Ex-library copy of Lafcadio Hearn’s famous collection of traditional Chinese ghost stories and legends. Hearn, a journalist by trade, was sent to cover the French West Indies shortly after this book’s publication, which eventually took him to Japan. There he married a local woman, took on a Japanese name (Koizumi Yakumo) and accepted a teaching position in Tokyo as an interpreter of Japanese culture for Westerners. In 1904, he released his similar collection of Japanese ghost stories, Kwaidan.
185pp. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration to front and spine. Ex-library, with marks to spine. Corners and edges worn. Spine ends bumped and worn. Patterned pastedowns and endpapers, marred by bookplate removal on pastedowns. Back pastedown stamped “discard”. Library stamps to title. Some spotting, pages otherwise clean. Generally good.
