Batkin, Jonathan and Mickenberg, David. Ritual, Power and Function: Oceanic Art of the Sepik River and Papuan Gulf. Oklahoma Museum of Art. 1981. First edition.

This scarce, well illustrated exhibition catalogue from the Oklahoma Museum of Art’s September – October 1981 show ” Ritual , Power and Function : Oceanic Art of the Sepik River and Papuan Gulf” provides a glimpse into realities of regional spiritual practice and the number of ritual and art objects from Papua New Guinea held in American collections.

Ultimately an assemblage of more than 100 works from private and public collections across Oklahoma, the accompanying essay by Jonathan Batkin of the Taylor Museum at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center seeks to establish the various masks, hooks, bowls, doors and boards as not merely decorative objects but rich semiotic and spiritual vessels of cultural meaning serving as spirit houses, genealogical records, and markers of authority.

Includes a full and useful catalogue record and extensive subject bibliography.
