Description
Young, Rose. The Record of the Leslie Woman Suffrage Commission, Inc. 1917-1929. Leslie Woman Suffrage Inc. Printed by JJ Little and Ives Company. New York. 1929. First Edition.
Founded by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1917 from instructions in the will of Miriam Leslie (1836-1914). “The Empress of Journalism”, for the advancement of women’s voting rights, the Leslie Woman Suffrage Commission, was immediately the subject of legal battles with Leslie’s other heirs who questioned the wisdom of her bequeathing so much of her fortune to so futile a cause.
This book, written by commission press officer, author, and women’s rights advocate Rose Emmet Young, spends nearly two-thirds of its overall length exploring the complexity of the 3-year legal case before dealing with the organization, actions, and disbursements of the commission.
Small 8v0o, 94pp, blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on front board and spine title and year. Small spots of wear and discoloration to boards, some wear to top and bottom spine. Front section to title over opened. Binding strings visible between pp8-9. Contains two photo portrait plates. Contemporary ownership signature dated 1929 on front free endpaper. Good condition.
