Description

1930s Detroit Area Dream Book by “Prof Elwood” with Joe Louis – Max Schmeling Reference

Elwood, Prof. Prof. Elwood’s Sure-Fire Dream Book. 1727 St Antoine Street, Suite 9. Detroit, Michigan. C. 1930s.

A representative 1930s dream book published in Detroit, part of a lottery gambling prognostication system popular within the early 20th century black diaspora, offering “a new combination of numbers for every dream”. In addition to the inclusion of New Thought maxims, the text expounds on its wondrous contents with references to Einstein’s theories on time as well as the 1936 Madison Square Garden boxing match between African-American boxer Joe “The Brown Bomber” Louis and Nazi Germany’s Max Schmeling. The first of two famous boxing matches, viewed as emblematic of the struggle between Nazi ideas of racial superiority with American ideals of equality, ended in a win for Schmeling, whereas Louis would emerge victorious in their 1938 rematch.
