Description
Noyes , J.H. Paul’s Prize. [ Oneida , NY. 1875]
Published home lecture ” Paul’s Prize ” delivered by John Humphrey Noyes, founder and leader of the Oneida Community, recasting the apostle Paul as a spiritual seeker pursuing physical perfection and immortality through the union with Jesus Christ. Purportedly the revelation of Noyes’ own direct communications with God, this sermon skews toward spiritualism in its explanation of Christ’s appearances to his apostles and Paul after his death, and encourages community members to seek a direct encounter with the incorporeal messiah in order to become like him, as both Paul and now Noyes had done. To Noyes the spiritual prize offered to Oneida members was a perfect, immortal body which would outlast death in imitation of Christ’s ascension after crucifixion.
First Edition. 16mo, 16 pp pamphlet. Pale green wraps show some soiling. Few creases along spine and a small fold to top forecorner. Pages clean with some wrinkling toward gutter of pp 7-8. Good condition.
