Mauge, Conrad E. Odu Ifa : Book Two Sacred Scriptures of Ifa. House of Providence : Mount Vernon, NY. 1994. First Edition.

A record of the sacred scriptures and teachings of the Yoruba religion of Ifa recorded by author and composer Dr Conrad E Mauge. Described as the essential spiritual corpus of Ifa a devotee must memorize in order to be a priest or babalawo (Yoruba for “father of secrets”) this book offers one half of the Odu verses, compared by the author to the Psalms of David, consisting of teaching stories from Ifa deities, associated symbols and their divinatory meanings.

The word “odu” has several meanings including pot, container, and deity. Specifically, this book introduces the story and powers of Oyeku Meji, the 15th odu, who helps to avoid premature death. The text contains verse twenty-nine described as “one of the Sixteen Great Poems of Ifa… one of the most powerful verses within the odus,” as well as a bolded warning not two write and chant the odus at the same time as this can be hazardous for the uninitiated.
