Description
Original anthology of Egyptian and Arab authors responding to the work of Naguib Mahfouz collected after his 1988 Nobel Prize win
Enani, M.M. Naguib Mahfouz Nobel 1988 Egyptian Perspectives. General Egyptian Book Organization. 1989. First Edition.
Egyptian novelist and writer Naguib Mahfouz (1911 – 2006) was the first Egyptian and (so far) only Arab writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work. As Mahfouz said of his win at the time:
“The Nobel Prize has given me, for the first time in my life, the feeling that my literature could be appreciated on an international level. The Arab world also won the Nobel with me. I believe that international doors have opened, and that from now on, literate people will consider Arab literature also. We deserve that recognition.”
Or, rather, as Samir Sarhan in his preface to this collection quotes Mahfouz as saying, “It is the Arabic language that has actually won the Nobel prize.”
Seeing international recognition of Mahfouz’s work as “a victory for Arab critics… who discovered him”, this is a collection for English audiences of Arabic criticism of Mahfouz’s writing from 1963 – 1988 to demonstrate the respect and engagement he had always commanded.
Includes bilingual analyses of Mahfouz’s work by many Cairo University faculty members and other notable critics as well as an extensive bibliography of Mahfouz’s writing.
8vo, 244pp, glossy laminate paper wraps with purple paper interior. Reading creases near spine hinges. Corners and edges worn. Contemporary pen pricing on back wrap. Scrape to textblock foreedge. Some pages dogearred. Pages toned but clean. Good condition.
