Besant, Annie and Leadbeater, CW. Man : When, How, and Whither A Record Of Clairvoyant Investigation. The Theosophical Publishing House : Adyar, Madras, India. 1954. Third Edition.
WHENCE comes man and whither goes he? In the fullest answer we can only say: Man, as a spiritual Being, comes forth from God and returns to God; but the Whence and Whither with which we deal here denote a far more modest sweep.
— Annie Besant
This third edition of the prominent Theosophy Book “Man : When How and Whither” by Theosophical society leaders Annie Besant and CW Leadbeater , was printed at the society’s world headquarters in Adyar, India in 1954.
A “clairvoyant investigation” of the origins and nature of Man, the text advances the position that humanness is one of seven stages of spiritual evolution from the base vegetable and mineral levels toward the divine. Mirroring these seven stages to the seven worlds and seven planets of the solar system (which align with earlier, alchemical ideas), the text charts a path of incarnation of the soul through the various “kingdoms” and “chains”.
