A record and response to the Lady of Shalott themed art show held at the List Art Center at Brown University in February and March 1985, this collection of nine essays and numerous illustrations tracks the influence of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem in literature and art as well as highlighting the various stories and themes which inspired the original poem.
Of particular interest to the authors is the work of pre-Raphaelite painters of the United States and United Kingdom, in particular William Holman Hunt whose symbolically rich treatment of the story appears both as the cover to this work and as the most famous contemporary illustration for Tennyson’s poem. Several of the essays included track Hunt’s development as an artist, the various drafts for his Lady of Shalott and the embedded meanings hidden in its details.
Large 8vo, 184pp, perfect bound printed wraps. Minor spotting along front wrap fore edge. Wear to spine ends with some losses along bruised bottom edge. Pages clean. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Very good condition.
