Description
Hartelius, T.J. Swedish Movements or Medical Gymnastics. Battle Creek, Michigan: Modern Medicine Publishing Co., 1896. First American Edition of the pioneering exercise manual J.H. Kellogg published in coordination with his medical work at the Battle Creek Sanitarium.
Long before yoga or Pilates became popular, the Swedish physician Hartelius wrote this book prescribing different movements and stretches for the betterment of Sweden’s youth and for the treatment of various ailments. In addition to step by step instructions and illustrations for all of the exercises described, Hartelius’ unspoken goal was to replicate Germany’s military successes, which Hartelius connected to their use of physical education. By the time Kellogg published the translation of this medical book, it’s unclear if he had the same vision in mind for Americans.
