Scarce Original Portrait by Buttre of Oneida Leader John Humphrey Noyes
Buttre , John Chester. Portrait Engraving of J.H. Noyes . c. 1865.
Portrait of Oneida Community founder John Humphrey Noyes by John Chester Buttre (1821-1893), the lithographer, illustrator and portraitist, particularly famous for his engravings of Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and other Civil War figures.
Noyes first strayed from Orthodox Christian teachings while studying at Yale Theological Seminary where he became convinced that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ had occurred in 70 C.E. Arriving at the belief that the only true Christians were those who lived perfectly and free of sin, Noyes committed himself to his own school of “perfectionism”, arguing that nothing one does is a sin if you have truly submitted your will to the divine.
Noyes’ Oneida Community, practicing “free love” and communal living, was established in upstate New York in 1848. Following Noyes’ flight to Canada while facing sex crimes charges in 1879, the community was officially dissolved in 1881.
This wood engraving of Noyes , dated by the Oneida Community Journal to about 1865, predates more common examples of Buttre’s work cut from his three-volume 1880-1881 “The American Portrait Gallery” series.
5 x 8″ engraving print. Some discoloration and mild wear to top and bottom edges, left-hand corners bumped. Portrait of Noyes with facsimile signature and caption “Engd by J.C. Buttre ” printed on lower right side of portrait. Good condition.
