Description
The Chips Are Down by Jean-Paul Sartre, New York: Lear Publishing, 1948, First US edition and First English Edition.
Translated from Sartre’s 1943 screeplay for the 1947 film, “Les Jeux Sont Faits“, starring Micheline Presle and Pierre Dumaine, this unusual romance serves as a meditation of what we value in life. Our protagonists, a recently killed French resistance fighter and a woman poisoned by her husband, meet in the afterlife and discover they were supposed to be soulmates. Because destiny didn’t do its job, they push for the chance to take matters into their own hands. What follows is a tragicomic return to earth for 24 hours, where if they can prove their love in that time, they will earn a second chance at life. Alternatively, they could get distracted by all the detritus of their old lives. It is Jean-Paul Sartre after all, and the original title directly translates to “the plays have been made”.
8vo, 187pp, black cloth boards with title and author printed to front board and spine. Wear to corners and spine edges, slight separation starting at top spine, binding firm. Pastedowns and endpapers tanned, pages clean. Missing dustjacket. Good condition. First US and First English edition Jean-Paul Sartre.
