A scarce first edition copy of Hunting Extinct Animals in the Patagonian Pampas by Dr Frederic Brewster Loomis , paleontologist and Amherst professor who oversaw the college’s 1911 South American expedition , gifted from an expedition member to a classmate.

Thoroughly illustrated with 47 photographs and diagrams the book captures all the details of the expedition including travel to South America, conditions of the stay, and a number of insights on paleohistory and paleontology including depictions of animal fossils and “Indian anvils” along with other pre-Columbian anthropological discoveries.

This copy was a gift from Amherst expedition member and later professor and author, Dr. Waldo Shumway.

Wear to front pastedown gutter with binding split. 1913 presentation inscription from Amherst expedition member Waldo Shumway first free endpaper. Pages foxed. 47 illustrations. Good condition.
