Description

Scarce quack medicine treatise Human Scrap Heap on the dangers of improper diet and digestion.

Phillips, F. Human Scrap Heap. F. Phillips : Blackpool, UK. 1931.

An unusual health and diet book on the dangerous of denatured foods and ineffective digestion, this short illustrated work by F. Phillips claims that the cause of depression, confusion, and shortened life can be found within the human gut. Transcribed from a series of talks, Phillips central argument is that processed foods and modern habits have increased impurities in the body. Phillips discusses the impact of this “scrap heap” on various organ systems, suggesting that the body’s residual toxins are the cause of ailments like constipation, ulcers, appendicitis and hemorrhoids as demonstrated in his hand drawn illustrations. Apparently foreseeing later developments in nutrition and dieting, Phillips says the two greatest enemies of human health are bread and white sugar.
