Description
Early work from pioneering Otsego Printer Elihu Phinney’s sons H & E Phinney Junior
Goldsmith, Oliver. Goldsmiths’ Roman History Abridged By Himself For The Use In Schools. H & E Phinney Jun : Otsego , NY. 1808. Fourth American Edition.
This revised history was one of Oliver Goldsmith’s last works, reflecting his noted love of children and underappreciated influence on youth literature and histories. Having published his History of Rome in 1769, this abridgment for the use of children in schools was released in 1772, two years before his death. That same year, 1774, Goldsmith’s History of Greece was published, followed by its own school abridgment by Goldsmith, published posthumously in 1775.
The copy, an example of the Fourth American Edition, was printed in Otsego , New York by H & E Phinney Jun. printers, the sons and apprentices of the Cooperstown area’s first printer Elihu Phinney. Predating the incorporation of Cooperstown in 1812, the Phinney brothers published books under their own imprint from their father’s Otsego shop until his death in 1813 before the eventually moving the H & E Phinney offices to Buffalo. The brothers’ 1828 Authorized edition of the King James’ Bible is believed to have served as the basis for parts of Mormon founder Joseph Smith’s biblical translations from 1831 – 1833.
