Max, Peter and Swami Sivananda. God with the Words of Swami Sivananda, Himalayas. William Morrow and Company, Inc : New York. 1970. First edition.

This scarce book from famed German – American pop artist Peter Max captures the spirit of his early psychedelic work as part of the New York counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Nazi Germany in 1937, Max emigrated with his parents to Shanghai, China, spending 10 years there before moving to Israel by way of Tibet in 1948 before moving to Paris and finally Brooklyn by 1953. His early exposure to Buddhism as well as the art training he received in Israel and Europe ahead of attending the Art Students League of New York perfectly prepared him for entry into the anti-War hippie scene of the 1960s, designing the poster for the second ever “Be In” gathering in Central Park over Easter Weekend 1967, the story of which served as the inspiration for the musical and movie Hair.

Introduced to Swami Satchidananda in 1968, Max became increasingly interested in eastern spirituality and yoga leading to his involvement with the establishment of the Integral Yoga Institute. This book, one of a series published in 1970, takes the words of Satchidananda’s  teacher, Swami Sivananda , and combines it with Max’s arresting yet simple artwork to better convey its themes.

Small tear hinge corner pg 8-9 leading to some creasing on surrounding pages. Small green smudge hinge corner pg 17. Very good.
