Pappas, Les, Winthrop Prince, Lloyd Dangle, and Rich Hack. The Works: Drugs, Sex & AIDS. San Francisco, CA: San Francisco AIDS Foundation, 1987.
An early piece of AIDS epidemic public health ephemera, this educational comic anthology distributed by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation the same year as the first Golden Gate Park AIDS Walk.
Reflecting the increased awareness of the causes and social impacts of HIV/AIDS, the comics focus on people from a variety of lifestyles, demonstrating a shift from the stigma of the epidemic as a “gay disease”. The title, a reference to a heroin shooting gallery, as well as the safe injection information provided on the back speak to the non-judgmental attitude provided throughout, evidence that these comics were meant to be read by and to educate all kinds of at-risk individuals in the Bay Area whether gay, straight, black, white, or drug user. Highlighting the work of a number of local illustrators and comic artists (as well as a number of borderline pornographic panels), this stated “adults only” publication is not your typical public health propaganda.
Oversize magazine, 35 pp, illustrated printed wraps. Some small creases to spine. Small bruise midway along bookblock edge effecting pages and wraps. Binding firm. Pages toned but clean. Good condition.
