Characterology consists of Leander Hamilton McCormick ‘s unique theories and observations about temperament, talents, longevity, honesty and other personal attributes based on debunked sciences of phrenology and racial classification that purports traits of intelligence, personality and morality can be read in the facial features, skin tone and skull shape. Based more or less explicitly on white supremacy, McCormick continued his work on related topics in his 1921 Student’s Course in Characterology: an exact science in fifteen lessons.

 

Includes photographs and analyses of the death masks of prominent figures including Sir Isaac Newtown and French General Jean Maximilien Lamarque.

 

8vo, 646pp, blue cloth boards with title, author and publisher gilt to front and spine. Minor soiling and wear to board faces. Corners and spine ends bumped and worn. Spine shows reading wear. Top bookblock edge gilt. Signs of past sticker damage to first free endpaper. Pages clean apart from some pencil underlining in section on people of darker, Southern European complexion. Illustrated throughout with 18 diagrams and 74 black and white photoplates. Good condition.
