Godwin, Joscelyn, forward. Maier, Michael. Magnum Opus Hermetic Source Works Number 22: Michael Maier’s Atalanta Fugiens (1617) An Edition of the Fugues, Emblems, and Epigrams. Adam McLean – The Hermetic Journal. Oxford, UK. 1987. First thus. Limited edition, #124 of 250.

Hand bound, limited edition hardcover of Hermetic Journal publisher Adam McLean’s 1987 reprint of Michael Maier’s alchemical opus, Atalanta Fugiens, featuring an original introductory essay and analysis by noted musicologist and occult scholar Joscelyn Godwin, author of books on Robert Fludd, Athanasius Kircher, and the use of music and sacred vowels in magical ritual.

Created by the court physician of the occult obsessed Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, the text’s striking (often referenced) emblems and epigrams are meant to be contemplated while listening to the accompanying fugues written for three voices. This copy is hand numbered, signed, and dated by McLean.

184pp. Red leatherette boards with red pastedowns. Signed and numbered by publisher on colophon. Corners bumped. Illustrated with more than 50 reproduction plates. Very good.
