1913 First American Edition Of The Noted Study of The Origins of Western Art In Ancient Greek Ritual by Jane Ellen Harrison
Harrison, Jane. Ancient Art and Ritual. Henry Holt and Company. New York. 1913.
The first edition, American issue on British sheets, of an early work by noted scholar Jane Ellen Harrison, arguably the first female British academic (cited as an inspiration by Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own) and foundational proponent of the modern study of Greek mythology and religion. Published as volume 70 of the Home University Library series (started in 1911), this work seeks to find the origins of art in enthusiastic religious expression as a way of paying homage to the gods, praying, and marking momentous occasions in life including birth, death, and rites of passage.
