1945 French Military Information Pamphlet for Occupation of Germany With References to Operation Werwolf Nazi Resistance Groups
Administration Militaire Francaise en Allemagne. AMFA Bulletin D’Information. No 5. Mission Militaire Pour Les Affaires Allemandes. Curial – Archereau. Paris. 1945.
A copy of the scarce French military information bulletin series summarizing the state of occupied Germany after the fall of the Third Reich. In addition to an overview of Germany’s various resources and industries, this issue also includes a map of the German autobahn highway system and a contemporaneous entry on “Operation Werwolf”, outlining then ongoing guerilla resistance efforts by Nazi holdouts.
Drawing inspiration from the mythology of werewolves and Viking berserkers, Operation Werwolf, also spelled as Operation Wehrwolf, was a short-lived resistance movement which utilized their name and tactics such as wholesale slaughter and sabotage to spark fear in the local populations, hoping to scare off and reduce cooperation with allied occupiers. Although largely unsuccessful, propaganda and terrorist actions gained the operation a reputation that continues to this day and inspired later groups including the musical collective Radio Werewolf cofounded by Zeena Schreck, daughter of Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey.
