Hartford : Oliver D. Cooke & Sons. 1823. First Edition.
Fascinating early American illustrated history and synopsis of world religions compiled by early Connecticut minister and bibliophile Thomas Robbins, first librarian of the Connecticut Historical Society, including early coverage of the spiritual life and religious ceremonies of Russian Shamanism, Tibetan Buddhism, Japanese Shinto, and Indian Hinduism.
Pulling information from a variety of sources to compose the first part of the text, covering Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, part two consists of extracts from the work of William Ward, British missionary to India and co-founder of Serampore College in West Bengal, who had died in March 1823, eight months before this book’s printing.
This first edition — several variants with slightly different titles exist– includes the two part Tabular Index by Hartford Mayor and American Bible Tract Society President Thomas Scott Williams breaking up the world tour with the locations of Christian groups and bible societies around the globe. The same Thomas Scott Williams (referred to as Judge Williams in Robbins’ journals) would later serve as a multiple term US Representative for Connecticut intermittently from 1817- 1819, 1819 – 1821, and from 1825 – 1829.
