Description
A Theory of Pure Design by Ross Denman Owned By Noted Southwestern Artist Gerald Cassidy and Formerly Held by the New Mexico State Library
Ross, Denman. A Theory of Pure Design: Harmony, Balance, Rhythm with Illustrations and Diagrams. Peter Smith. New York. 1933.
A relatively scarce technical theory of design, this book was formerly owned by noted New Mexican artist Ira Dymond Gerald Cassidy. Originally from the East Coast, Cassidy’s health lured him to the South West where he became known for his western scenes, images of Native Americans, and large scale murals.  Presented to him in early 1934 shortly ahead of Cassidy’s death that February, this book was donated along with the rest of Cassidy’s library to the University of New Mexico, the book was later transferred to the New Mexico State Library before it reentered private hands.
201pp, blue cloth boards. Wear to faces and edges. Corners and spine ends bumped and worn with losses. Ex-library with numbering in white on spine. Text block toned. Pastedowns soiled. Front pastedown with bookplates from University of New Mexico and New Mexico State Library. Presentation inscription first free endpaper in pencil with later owner’s name written above it in pen. Some pencil notes. Back gutter exposed. Fairly good.
