Description

Self-published philosophy book “A Book In Every Home” by the eccentric creator of Coral Castle Edward Leedskalnin

Leedskalnin, Edward. A Book In Every Home Containing Three Subjects: Ed’s Sweet Sixteen, Domestic and Political Views. Edward Leedskalnin. Homestead, Florida. 1936.

Self-published philosophy book by the eccentric creator of Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida Edward Leedskalnin, who moved to the United States from Latvia to live as a hermit after being jilted by his 16-year-old fiancé. He spent the rest of his life quarrying and building today’s Coral Castle—built entirely from coral rock—as his home and workshop, including accommodations for a wife and child although he never married.

Divided into three parts, the text begins with the quite incel-ish “Ed’s Sweet Sixteen”, which claims that girls are at their best at age 16 because they have not been corrupted by the world, “soiled” by “fresh boys”, and have not learned to be duplicitous. In the same vein, part two’s “Advice to Parents (Particularly Mothers) On Raising Children Properly” is very fixated on the cultivation of good looks and habits in children, especially girls as “looks are her best asset”. Part three strays into political theory, arguing that only property should be protected from government, and only those who pay taxes as opposed to “weaklings” should vote. According to Leedskalnin, people who are not productive and self-sufficient should die.

Although the copyright date is given as 1936, the text in its current form is clearly later, with the introduction citing Leedskalnin’s death in 1951. Comparisons with library records reveal the same page count and introduction in all holdings. This edition is not to be confused with the similar appearing, later photocopied edition.
