Description
First English Translation of Joan of Arc Witchcraft Trial Documents Published for 500th Anniversary of Her Death, The Trial of Jeanne D’Arc by WP Barrett
Barrett, W.P. The Trial of Jeanne D’Arc. George Routledge & Sons. London. 1931.
Collection of original Jean D’Arc (Joan of Arc) trial documents translated and published for the 500th anniversary of her execution by WP Barrett. Viewed as a virginal warrior and prophetess by the French and burned at the stake for witchcraft by the English at just the age of 16, she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic church in 1920, 11 years before this book’s release.
Part of George Routledge and Son’s Broadway Medieval Library series, the text offers a well-regarded, complete record of the proceedings of the witchcraft trial of Jeanne D’Arc translated into English for the first time from the original Latin and French sources by Barrett. It also includes numerous reproduction illustrations (like the heretic’s crown Jeanne D’Arc was wearing when burnt), as well as a robust bibliography.
352pp + ads. Grey paper boards with blue cloth spine with gilt lettering. Corners and spine ends bumped. Edges worn. Minor soiling and foxing to textblock. Pen ownership signature first free endpaper. Illustrated with 12 plates. Lacks dustjacket. Very good.
