Description

Circa 1970 First Edition of Revised Black and White Magic, the Hoodoo Grimoire Attributed to New Orleans Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau

Laveau, Marie. Revised Black and White Magic. N.P. N.D. [c. 1970].

First revised edition of the mysterious voodoo-hoodoo grimoire Black and White Magic attributed to New Orleans voodoo queen Marie Laveau (but likely authored by N.D.P. Bivins who wrote the introduction).

Mostly structured as a record of Laveau’s consultations with clients, the text includes ritual remedies to improve business, stop gossip, gain love, friends, and success, as well as aid in legal matters and against evil spirits. Instructions are also provided both for fortune-telling with a standard deck of 52 playing cards as well as rudimentary astrology.

A text known as Black and White Magic, attributed to Marie Laveau, likely first entered publication some time in the 1920s with Zora Neale Hurston describing a record of 30 consultations with Laveau in her 1931 essay, “Hoodoo In America”. This copy, approximately from 1970, predates the dated 1975 edition of  the same text titled “Revised Black and White Magic” published by Bombay Publishing Co. in 1975 ahead of subsequent editions of variant titles.

3 copies found in OCLC as of October 2024.

64pp. Staple bound card pamphlet. Minor wear to corners and edges. Text block toned, pages clean. Very good.
