Scarce Original Issue of Beautifully Printed Commune Newsletter Kaliflower
[Kaliflower]. Kaliflower. Vol 3. No. 18. [San Francisco]. [N.P.] September 2, 1971.
A well preserved issue of the beautifully printed and never commercially sold commune newsletter Kaliflower published and distributed within the San Francisco commune scene from the Kaliflower Commune headquarters on Sutter Street. Intended only for free distribution to commune members, it ran weekly for three years before adopting a laxer release schedule. Each issue features articles of interest to commune members as well as classifieds for various members’ needs. This issue includes a description of the short lived esoteric Buddhist group Kailas Shugendo, their ritual hikes of Mt Tamalpais and Mt Shasta and their music with the Mantric Sun Band (both referenced in Allen Ginsberg’s Pacific High Studio Mantras), as well as a letter from members of the utopian Purple Submarine, seeking to correct the record about their nonmonogamous practices and philosophy. Also includes coverage of the forced closure of Haight Food Conspiracy distribution centers by the Health department.
10pp, Coptic hand stitched periodical. Some soiling front and back wraps. Minor wear to corners and edges. Pages clean. Very good.
