McClellan, Robert and Shivers, Lynne, ed. The Dandelion, Newsletter Of Movement For a New Society. June 1983. Life Center Asset Inc. Philadelphia, PA.
This issue of the Movement For a New Society Newsletter, The Dandelion, features a history and philosophy of the Movement For a New Society (MNS) written founding member and Quaker activist George Willoughby as well as a report from England from founding member and Southern Christian Leadership Conference leader Bill Moyer. The issue also features reporting from Quaker activist Hazel Tulecke in Guatemala in 1983 about the role of peace brigades in resisting the then-ongoing brutal campaign of violence and repression directed against the nation’s native Mayan population by the Guatemalan government. Viewed as a threat to centralized authoritarian power, the Guatemalan military and government-backed paramilitaries targeted Mayan villages killing and torturing men, women, and children, and destroying homes and crops in a terror campaign of murder, rape, and forced displacement. The violence resulted in the deaths of an estimated 200,000 Mayans, with many more being displaced or forced to flee for their lives with the 1980 – 1983 genocide of Mayan people of Guatemala sometimes remembered as “The Silent Holocaust”. An unpaginated advertising insert for the MNS’ book series is also included.
4pp + [4] insert. Folded newsprint folio. Toned with age but otherwise pristine condition. Very good.
